As Africa' s industrialization accelerates, Chinese environmental protection companies continue to deepen their presence in overseas markets, writing new chapters of global expansion through technological innovation and localized services. As the overseas brand of Shanghai Emperor of Cleaning Hi-Tech Co., Ltd. (ECH), ECOSPARK inherits the parent company' s mature project experience and solid technological foundation. Leveraging the successful implementation of the Phase I Water Treatment EPC Project at Mekelle Industrial Park in Ethiopia, ECOSPARK has demonstrated to the global market its strong capability to undertake large-scale overseas environmental projects, creating a replicable model for the global expansion of China' s environmental technologies.

01 Precision Breakthrough: Addressing the Core Water Treatment Challenges of African Industrial Parks
Mekelle Industrial Park is a national-level industrial hub developed by the Ethiopian government. Phase I of the park covers an area of 75 hectares, with a total building area of 100,000 square meters. After commissioning, the park faced dual challenges: an imbalance between water supply and demand for production and daily use, and the need for stable, compliant wastewater treatment. These challenges imposed stringent requirements on the stability, adaptability, and treatment efficiency of the water treatment system.

Based on in-depth insights into the African market and ECH' s extensive practical experience in environmental engineering, the project team precisely established a closed-loop system of “water supply – treatment – reuse”, comprehensively addressing three core needs:
Municipal water supply: Designed with a daily capacity of 4,500 m³/d, the system adopts treatment processes accurately matched to raw water quality, providing a stable water supply for industrial production and the daily needs of thousands of employees within the park.

Domestic wastewater treatment: Tailored processes were developed for wastewater from dormitories and office areas, with a daily treatment capacity of 3,000 m³/d, ensuring efficient purification.
Industrial wastewater treatment: Focusing on the complexity and high treatment difficulty of industrial effluents, the system achieves a daily treatment capacity of 2,000 m³/d, ensuring compliant discharge and resource recycling.
02 Technological Core: Customized Solutions Tailored to African Conditions
In response to Ethiopia' s hot and humid climate, as well as the relatively limited local operation and maintenance capabilities, the project team moved away from a “copy-and-paste” approach to technology deployment. Drawing on ECH' s years of technological accumulation, they developed targeted solutions to ensure that advanced technologies truly fit overseas application scenarios.
In the field of domestic wastewater treatment, an optimized anaerobic–anoxic–oxic (A²/O) three-stage biological process was innovatively adopted. The anaerobic tank precisely controls dissolved oxygen levels to efficiently decompose macromolecular organic matter. The anoxic tank is equipped with a standby carbon source dosing system to ensure denitrification efficiency during cooler seasons. The oxic tank utilizes a low-energy aeration system combined with high-efficiency microorganisms, enhancing shock load resistance. As a result, the effluent fully complies with local environmental standards, while achieving an high water reuse rate, supporting sustainable water resource recycling. Biochemical sludge is treated through composting, enabling sludge resource recovery.

For industrial wastewater treatment, a “pretreatment + two-stage biological system” was employed. Impurities are efficiently intercepted through self-developed screening equipment, while equalization tanks balance water quality before pollutants are degraded through advanced biological reactions. All core equipment adheres to the design principles of “low energy consumption and easy maintenance,” supported by a dedicated operation and maintenance training program. After specialized training, local staff are able to independently carry out daily operations, effectively resolving the long-standing challenge of difficult O&M in African projects.
03 Technological Core: Customized SoProven Strength: The Foundation of ECOSPARK' s Global Expansionlutions Tailored to African Conditions
The successful delivery of the Mekelle Industrial Park water treatment project is not only a significant milestone in ECH' s overseas environmental engineering practice, but also a key source of confidence for ECOSPARK' s international market expansion. This success is underpinned by three core strengths:
Independent Technology Development: From a comprehensive range of water treatment equipment to the core A²/O process, ECOSPARK relies on ECH' s full-chain, independently developed technologies, achieving controllability over core technologies and equipment, reducing reliance on imported solutions, and showcasing the strength of China' s environmental technologies.
Localized Solutions: By deeply adapting to Africa' s climatic characteristics and local operation conditions, ECOSPARK rejects “one-size-fits-all” standardized solutions. Through low-energy, user-friendly designs, the technologies are effectively implemented on the ground.
End-to-End Services: Utilizing the EPC general contracting model, ECOSPARK covers the entire project lifecycle—from design and procurement to construction and operation & maintenance. Through proactive risk management and a robust performance assurance system, projects are delivered efficiently and operate reliably over the long term, demonstrating strong full-process service capabilities.

As ECH' s overseas brand, ECOSPARK is committed to bringing China' s mature environmental technologies and services to the global market. The successful implementation of the Mekelle Industrial Park project has fully validated our capabilities in project execution and technological adaptation under complex overseas conditions. Looking ahead, ECOSPARK will continue to leverage the parent company' s strong foundation, deepen its presence in international markets, and provide customized, cost-effective environmental solutions to more countries and regions—allowing China' s environmental expertise to shine on the global stage.
